Hostage Load Scams in Georgia

Everything you need to know to identify, prevent, and report hostage load scams when hiring a moving company in Georgia.

What is a Hostage Load Scams?

A 'hostage load' is a federal crime where a moving company or broker refuses to deliver or unload your household goods unless you pay a significantly higher amount than the original binding estimate. Under federal FMCSA regulations, interstate movers are required to deliver your goods if you pay 100% of a binding estimate or 110% of a non-binding estimate.

If you are planning a move within Georgia or moving out of state, you must be aware of these tactics. Rogue operators specifically target vulnerable consumers during stressful life transitions.

Red Flags & Warning Signs

  • The mover refuses to put the delivery date in writing.
  • They demand a massive cash payment upon arrival before opening the truck doors.
  • The weight or inventory is suddenly claimed to be much higher, with no chance for you to verify.
  • They threaten to sell your belongings at auction if you do not pay the ransom.

How to Protect Yourself in Georgia

  • Do NOT pay the ransom in cash. Contact local law enforcement.
  • File an immediate complaint with the FMCSA National Consumer Complaint Database.
  • Contact your state's Attorney General office.
